GT Academy Winner to Race Valentino Rossi at Monza

Jann Mardenborough (center) on the podium at the Dubai 24 Hours

Nissan's most recent GT Academy winner, Jann Mardenborough, starts his first full season as a professional racing driver this weekend at the temple of speed itself: Monza. The 20 year-old British racer will take on the dauntingly fast Monza track in the new Nissan GT-R Nismo GT3.
The No.35 GT Academy Team RJN car will be up against some stiff competition this weekend from brands such as Audi, Aston Martin, BMW, Dodge, Ferrari, Jaguar, Lamborghini, McLaren, Mercedes and Porsche.

The extra twist is that one of the Ferrari 458s will be raced by none other than nine-time world motorcycle champion Valentino Rossi. This means that Jann has gone from entering GT Academy as a total beginner to racing Rossi in just one year.
"Il Doctore" won't be Jann's main focus at Monza though. He is there to do a job for his team and get the best possible result, along with his teammates Alex Buncombe and Chris Ward. First on his job list is to learn the Monza track.
"I've never even been to Monza before let alone raced there," said Jann. "I've driven it on the PlayStation so I know which way the corners go and I can't wait to get out there for real. Monza has incredible history and I really hope I can grab a moment to go and check out the old banking that the F1 cars raced on in years gone by."

"Qualifying will be important for us as the start of the race is going to be very hectic with over 55 GT3 cars thundering down into Turn One," he continued. "The GT-R has very good high speed stability and fantastic brakes so I hope we can go out there and get a great result. We want to do well in this championship so we need to do a good solid job and not take any big risks."
It's one year since Jann entered the Nissan PlayStation GT Academy and it has been a whirlwind of a year for him on Nissan's driver development program.

"It's the best feeling ever being a professional racing driver," said Jann. "Just hearing the GT-R start up at a race weekend makes me smile and chuckle to myself. I still can't believe it!"
Is he fazed by the great Rossi?
"I don't know too much about bikes but I know he is the guy to beat on them. Actually I need to get his autograph for a friend of mine."

Nissan Envisions Cars Communicating With Cars To Eliminate Crashes

On the heels of the 2012 Nissan Versa Sedan being awarded a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, Nissan’s Bob Yakushi spoke with the Media Center about the future of product safety.

Yakushi discusses a collaborative relationship with other OEMs that is studying a vehicle-to-vehicle, or vehicle-to-infrastructure, communication system – all with the goal of achieving a zero-accident vision for the future.

Q1: What is Nissan’s vision for the future of safety, with regard to vehicle development?

A1: Nissan has a vision of ultimately having no accidents and no fatalities. And so to accomplish that type of ultimate goal, we have Nissan’s Safety Shield. This concept addresses normal driving when a risk hasn’t appeared, a risk has appeared, a pre-collision risk, the collision itself, and then post-collision. And so, what we are doing is trying to individually address all of these areas with different types of technologies and features on our vehicles.

For example, we have forward collision warning, we have lane departure prevention and lane-departure warning, we have a blind spot intervention and also now back-up intervention on a vehicle. So, by applying these different technologies, we can form different layers around the vehicle to help mitigate the risk of crash and the risk to passengers and drivers.

Q2: Where’s the next breakthrough for vehicles and safety?

A2: For the last 25 years we’ve been focused on passive safety – our zone body construction, multiple airbags to help mitigate and reduce injuries in the event of a crash. Where are headed is how to try to avoid the risk of a crash. So, in that area we have looked at vehicle dynamic control, many of the advanced technologies, such as forward collision warning, blind spot warning, lane departure warning, rear collision intervention. But, ultimately what we want to do is be very predictive.

How can we do that? Well, how about cars talking to cars, vehicle-to-vehicle communications. As we move in that direction, ultimately this type of communication between vehicles can help mitigate and reduce the risk of injury. We are working pre-competitively with other OEMs to develop a vehicle-to-vehicle, or vehicle-to-infrastructure type communication system to help go toward that zero accident vision that NISSAN has.

Q3: We’ve heard a lot about back-up cameras – but, really, they aren’t a safety aid, can you explain?

A3: Rear-view monitors that we have equipped on our vehicles are not meant as a safety device. They are intended to be used as a parking aid to help you get into that tight parking space or to look for a fixed object you might run into. For dynamic situations such as people or animals moving in and out of the rear area around your vehicle, that environment changes very quickly. You shouldn’t just rely on that rear-view monitor but you should be checking to see what is around you so you can safely back up your vehicle.

Q4: Summer will be here soon, and people will be on the roads traveling, what are the top three things we can do to ensure safety for our passengers and other travelers?

A4: Spring is coming up, summer is coming up and one of the most important thing you can do when you go on vacation or a trip is wear your seat belt. And that is a primary restraint system in your vehicle and really, airbags are supplemental to help you in the event of a crash. So, wear your seat belt all the time, don’t text on your phone – that is a distraction and against the law now in a number of U.S. states.

When it comes to your most precious cargo, your children or other children, make sure they are properly restrained in a child-safety restraint system appropriate for their age, size and weight. Remember, wear your seat belt, don’t text when you are driving and the obvious one, don’t drink and drive.

Nissan LEAF Blazes New Trail for Bluegrass Underground

“I just can’t be happy since you went away…”
Bluegrass legend Del McCoury is crooning one of his classic laments, as a video camera on a 20-foot jib swoops over the stage and across an enthusiastic audience.

“…I keep searching for happiness, though it seems I never win.”

McCoury has been performing since the 1960s and has sung this song countless times before. But, this time, it’s different.

He is more than 300 feet underground with a full TV production crew, a dozen other musical acts and 500 of his closest friends. They are taping a new season of “Bluegrass Underground,” sponsored on PBS by Nissan, on location in the Cumberland Caverns of Warren County, TN.

The video, lighting and sound gear required for this production can’t be hand carried into the cave. Vehicles are needed to traverse a long, constricted dirt passageway with steep inclines. But, off-road four-wheelers pollute the still air of this unique environment.

“Bluegrass Underground” producer Todd Mayo observed that it took 3 million years for nature to form the Cumberland Caverns, and now that it is being filled with music, it is important to be “in harmony” with the world down there.

“Bringing combustible engines into the cave to get the gear and our artists into the cave has been a problem,” said Mayo. “Now we have a solution.”

The 100% all-electric Nissan LEAF is an answer because it emits no emissions for the cave or the performers to absorb, and for the crew and audience to inhale. Carrying McCoury into the cave for his performance, the LEAF traverses the rock passageways with only inches of clearance on each side and, in spots, above. With an incredulous smile, McCoury describes his trip underground as the strangest ride of his life and praised the LEAF’s handling.

Sara Schaffer, a bassist for the David Mayfield Parade, had not ridden in an electric car before, not to mention underground.

“It makes it a lot easier for all of us to breath which is cool, and I like it better than the four wheelers because of the (lack of) noise,” said Schaffer. “You could be slipping in and out with people not even noticing. It’s really neat.”

Violet lights bathe the rock walls all around as the Del McCoury Band performs its American roots style of music.

“If you don’t want me,” sings McCoury, banjo and fiddle galloping in pace with his old guitar, “I’ll dry my tears and move on.”

Cumberland Caverns once stored civil war gunpowder. Moonshiners have used it, and now an electric car moves musicians and equipment in and out of this historic monument.

And, earlier, as McCoury stepped out of the LEAF and marveled at the ancient environment into which it brought him to perform, he had mused about this unexpected experience: “Guess only my music stays the same.”

Nissan Undertakes Yearly Emergency Drill Ahead of March 11 Anniversary

Japan Earthquake Updates Newsroom

With its global headquarters in Yokohama as command central, Nissan conducted its annual emergency response drills Monday with crisis simulation exercises.

Coming just days before the one-year anniversary of the disasters of March 2011, some 50 employees in the headquarters were involved in the drills, including staff at the Oppama plant in Kanagawa prefecture and various domestic sites of transmission supplier JATCO.

Such business contingency drills have become an essential part of the company’s crisis response preparations since the 2007 Niigata earthquake.

Last year's 9.0 magnitude earthquake off the coast of northeastern Japan put Nissan’s disaster response teams into high gear.

Within minutes, the crisis management committee was up and running with Chief Operating Officer Toshiyuki Shiga leading the Global Disaster Control Headquarters.

"After these type of disasters occur, the company should know that employees' safety is first. We should also know about the safety of the suppliers, dealers or our affiliated companies and then how to restore operations," explains Shiga. “This process [aims] to prioritize and to make a decision — through this type of training drills we can easily understand the priority and not panic.”

Thanks to practice drills that took place only weeks earlier, response procedures were clear and quickly implemented.

In the months that followed, the crisis management committee continued to tackle aftershocks that affected production recovery, while the experience stressed the importance of regular preparation.

"This company has been doing this every year, for the last five or six years,” says Nissan Senior Vice President Hitoshi Kawaguchi, referring to the importance of regular drills. “Once you prepare yourself for all kinds of disasters then you don't panic, and I think that's quite important for us to be well-trained for natural disasters like a great earthquake or anything which could damage the company's operations.”

Nissan's rapid response to the March 11 disasters helped the automaker to recover faster than industry peers, while emergency response drills in Japan are seen as a template for similar preparation plans across the globe.

Nissan and Habitat for Humanity kick off sustainable building grant program in Atlanta area

Kenya Bouie, a single mother of two, understands the concept of sweat equity. And, now her willingness to invest in others’, and in her own, future is paying off in a life-changing event.

Bouie will soon move into a new home in Jonesboro, Ga., that volunteers from Nissan are helping to build along with Habitat for Humanity. Bouie’s house will be certified to ENERGY STAR 3.0 requirements, recognized as an advanced level of energy efficiency.

The house is the first of 10 Habitat for Humanity homes that will be built around the U.S. as a result of a sustainable building grant from NISSAN.

Bouie first worked with Habitat for five months, helping to remodel other Habitat houses and improve neighborhoods, before building her own house. “I met a lot of people” she said, and realized I wasn’t the only one facing an uphill housing battle.“ At the same time, Bouie showed Habitat that she understood and appreciated what a unique opportunity she was being offered, “And, I learned what should be done in a home when something happens, how to fix it without having to spend a lot of money (to be) cost efficient, and it helps me be independent.”

The sustainable building program is part of an ongoing multi-million dollar partnership between NISSAN and Habitat. Since the partnership began in 2005, Nissan has donated 104 vehicles to support Habitat’s mission, and its employees have built more than 50 Habitat homes in communities where Nissan has corporate operations and manufacturing plants.

A few dozen NISSAN employees and local Nissan dealership employees put in their own sweat equity at the Jonesboro jobsite, directly investing in Kenya Bouie and the future of her two young girls. In a matter of days, the three-bedroom home will be ready for roofers and utility installers to follow.

Kenya Bouie will be moving out of an apartment complex in Clayton County, which she described as too crime-ridden to let her girls play outside. She hammered, lifted, laughed, and sweated along with the construction volunteers, and as the framing of her home quickly raised, Bouie expressed her gratitude over and over. She couldn’t stop smiling while she worked. “I’ll never forget what people are doing for me and my girls”, she said.

About the 2012 Nissan Quest

From its bold styling with full surround glass to its extensive list of family friendly innovations, the 2012 Nissan Quest “gets” parenting better than any other minivan. Quest’s sophisticated, modern exterior combines fluid sculptural elements with a dynamic mass and crafted details to provide a fresh take on minivan design – helping create a look as if Quest was carved from one solid piece of sculptor’s stone. The 2012 Quest comes with standard Nissan Intelligent Key® and optional one-touch power sliding doors, which unlock and open the side door with the simple touch of a button. To assist entry further, the Quest’s 2nd row features a standard walk-in device for easier access to the 3rd row. A one-touch unlock/open power rear liftgate is standard on Quest SL and LE models.

The easy-to-use convenience also carries over into the interior design with the fold-flat 2nd and 3rd row seats. The 3rd row folds forward - unlike any other minivan, there is no stowing required. The permanent rear storage well is always available, and a flat cargo floor is achieved without removing any seats. Third row power return seatbacks are also available on Quest LE.

One of the most innovative technologies is the Quest LE’s standard Advanced Climate Control System (ACCS) with Plasmacluster™ air purifier and Grape Polyphenol Filter. The system works three ways to help reduce allergens and unwanted odors within the Quest cabin. Quest’s standard Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) includes a segment-first application of Nissan’s Easy Fill Tire Alert.

All 2012 Quest models feature a standard VQ-series 3.5-liter DOHC V6 rated at 260 horsepower and 240 lb-ft of torque, and an advanced Xtronic CVT™ transmission that provides a smooth driving experience. Fuel economy is estimated at 19 mpg City/24 mpg Highway. Quest also features 4-wheel independent suspension, 4-wheel disc brakes and vehicle-speed-sensitive power steering. As part of Nissan’s “Safety Shield” concept, Quest is designed to incorporate a number of advanced safety systems, including the Blind Spot Warning (BSW) system, which is standard on Quest LE. BSW helps alert the driver by illuminating an indicator light in the outside mirror if another vehicle is detected in the blind spot area. If the driver then engages the turn signal, the indicator flashes and an audible alert sounds.

Seven exterior colors are available, along with two interior colors in a choice of cloth (S and SV) or leather-appointed (SV – beginning April production, SL and LE) seating.

NISSAN SALES IN EUROPE JUMP 15% IN JANUARY

Today Nissan announced a 15% year-on-year rise in January sales to 55,098 units, supported by the sale of models manufactured in Europe.
In a flat market, Nissan increased its monthly share by 0.6% to 4.2% overall in January, with locally-produced models accounting for nearly 80% of sales.
The Sunderland-built Qashqai crossover continues to dominate the segment it helped create with sales of nearly 20,000 last month. While Juke, its smaller Sunderland stable-mate, achieved a 33% jump in year-on-year sales to rival Qashqai in some markets including the UK and Russia.
Nissan also produces the vast majority of its light commercial vehicles sold in Europe within the region at plants in Barcelona and Avila, Spain. This segment made a significant contribution to the monthly total with a 16% increase in overall sales compared to last year.
Nissan Vice President for Sales Operations in Europe, Guillaume Cartier, said: "Nissan is reaping the benefit of putting our customers' desires and expectations ahead of traditional thinking.
"In the crossover segment we identified an unmet need and produced Murano, Qashqai and Juke - one of our most successful model families ever. And we are also innovating across our range introducing new engines, new technologies and new ideas.
"This is the main reason we enjoyed a record 2011 in Europe, and it is extremely encouraging to see this level of sales success and momentum carrying over into 2012."
Russia is Nissan's largest single European market, and also where the company achieved its biggest monthly increase - from a 5.7% share in January 2011 to 7.4% in 2012.
Other top performing markets in January included France and the UK, both of which increased sales by 22% year-on-year. While market share in Italy climbed to 4%, and a 4.6% share was achieved in the Nordic region (comprising Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland and the Baltics).
Yesterday Nissan again underlined its commitment to continue bringing dynamic and segment-defining models to the market by releasing details of the INVITATION concept car.
This innovative compact hatchback will be unveiled at next month's Geneva Motor Show, and will inspire an all-new production model to be launched in Europe during 2013.

Nissan NV200 Compact Cargo Van Offers Efficient Packaging with a Large Cargo Space Within a Small Footprint

The all-new Nissan NV200 Compact Cargo Van, which makes its North American debut at the 2012 Chicago Auto Show, is set to join the growing lineup of Nissan Commercial Vehicles in early 2013 at 300 Nissan Commercial Vehicle dealerships nationwide. The NV200 follows the full-size Nissan NV Cargo, introduced in spring 2011, and the recently announced full-size Nissan NV Passenger that goes on sale this spring. The Nissan NV200 provides a new entry point for current cargo van and small pickup buyers looking for a compact, efficient alternative to their larger, less fuel-efficient vehicles.

“There is an increasing need for a ‘right-sized’ van that optimizes cargo space while offering the best possible fuel economy and an affordable price – the exact sweet spots of the innovative new Nissan NV200,” said Joe Castelli, vice president, Nissan Commercial Vehicles and Fleet. “Businesses today, both large and small, are also looking for vehicles that represent their brands in the best light – smart, innovative, and professional. NV200 does that and much more.”

While new to North America, the Nissan NV200 compact van is already in use in more than 40 countries around the world, receiving acclaim from both users and media alike for its optimal functionality and smart design. It won the 2010 International Van of the Year award in Europe, the 2010 Commercial Delivery Van (CDV) of the Year in China, and the 2011 Universal Design Award from Universal Design GMbH, a German organization dedicated to promoting the convergence of design and the emerging importance of customer needs. NV200 has also established a presence as the strong segment leader in Japan with a wide-ranging lineup that includes a taxi version.

“Our global success provides a great foundation for the North American version, which we know will become an essential tool for business,” added Castelli.

High Volume in a Small Footprint, Exceptional Ease of Use

As the next “innovation for business,” NV200 offers a large cargo capacity of 123 cubic feet (estimated using SAE J1100 rev 2009) with a small exterior footprint. Unique for North America, the NV200 body has been extended 7.9 inches (200 mm) versus the models sold in other global markets. This longer body length offers additional cargo carrying capability for North American customers.

Measuring just 186.2 inches in overall length, on a 115.2-inch wheelbase, NV200 is highly maneuverable in traffic and negotiating city parking spaces. Yet it allows for a 1,500-pound (estimated) maximum payload. The cargo area dimension between the efficiently designed wheelhouses allows for loading standard U.S. 40x48-inch pallets. Added utility is provided by the standard integrated mounting points, which allow installation of racks and shelves without drilling into the sidewalls, and six available floor mounted cargo hooks in the cargo area.

NV200’s exterior design features a Nissan signature front grille, aerodynamic front end design, and functional cabin design. The large body side includes low-effort dual sliding side doors and large areas for business signage and graphics. In the rear, NV200 features tall 40/60 split opening doors with dual opening positions (90 and 180 degrees). The low floor height and tall interior cargo height aid easy loading and unloading. Other exterior features include halogen headlights, durable black front and rear bumpers, and outside mirrors with wide-angle spotter mirrors and available heated function.

“In many ways, choosing a new work van is like finding a new business partner. Beyond the basic necessities, it must instill trust that it can always get the job done – and that you are comfortable with for many years,” said Castelli. “In that regard, along with the innovative cargo area features, NV200’s interior is designed to offer comfort and convenience day in and day out.”

The driver-focused cockpit includes both comfort and functional features. The driver’s seat is 6-way adjustable with manual lumbar and armrest and is designed for durability with outboard vinyl wear patches. NV200 offers “Mobile Office” functionality with a center console featuring laptop/hanging file folder storage, pen/pencil tray, CD holder, and dual cupholders. Recessed storage areas are provided on the upper instrument panel for folders and documents. In addition the passenger seat folds down to serve as a worktop or extends the cargo space for hauling longer items.

Power windows with auto up/down are standard. A 12-volt power outlet on the instrument panel is standard, along with an available 12-volt power point in rear of center console. There is also a passenger-side underseat storage tray, drive computer, battery saver feature, AM/FM/CD with auxiliary input and two front door mounted speakers.

Available technology includes a Nissan Navigation System, Bluetooth® wireless communications, XM® Satellite Radio (XM® subscription required, sold separately), RearView Monitor, and telematics pre-wiring (Nissan Fleet Tracker).

Standard safety features include the Nissan Advanced Air Bag System (AABS), roof-mounted curtain side impact supplemental air bags for front occupant head protection, front seat mounted driver and passenger side impact supplemental air bags, Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC), and Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS).

Efficiency and Affordability

The 2013 Nissan NV200 is built on Nissan’s proven compact commercial platform and features an efficient 2.0-liter 16-valve DOHC 4-cylinder engine. The engine is matched with a responsive and efficient Xtronic CVT® transmission.

The suspension utilizes independent struts and stabilizer bar in front and a leaf spring design in the rear. Front disc/rear drum brakes with Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) and Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD) are standard, along with electric power-assisted steering and 15-inch steel wheels mounted with 185/60R15 high-load all-season tires.

“The Nissan NV200 is designed as a durable work tool, with features such as the seating wear patches, low-effort sliding side doors and wide-opening rear doors,” adds Castelli. “And since we fully understand how vans like this are used in business, it’s also a very pleasant vehicle to drive and use as a mobile office.”

One other key element of NV200, built in from the earliest planning, is low total cost of ownership. The 2013 Nissan NV200 will have a competitive price, excellent fuel efficiency, and reduced upfitting costs (due to the standard integrated mounting points), all of which will provide business owners with a low total cost of ownership.

Two Well-Equipped Models

Two well-equipped models are available, Nissan NV200 S and Nissan NV200 SV in a choice of five exterior colors, matched with a gray cloth interior.

In addition to the long list of standard features on the NV200 S, the SV model adds power heated outside mirrors, power door locks with auto-locking feature, remote keyless entry with two key fobs, cruise control with steering wheel-mounted controls, rear cargo floor mat, additional 12V power point in the rear of the center console, six floor-mounted cargo hooks in the cargo area, and full wheel covers.

Several option packages will be available, including rear door glass; an Exterior Appearance Package with body-color bumpers, door handles and outside mirrors and chrome grille; Bluetooth® Hands-free Phone System; and a Technology Package with Nissan Navigation System, RearView Monitor and XM® Satellite Radio (XM® subscription required, sold separately).

The new Nissan NV200 will be manufactured in Cuernavaca, Mexico and available through a select network of certified Nissan Commercial Vehicle dealers nationwide.

INVITATION Concept Previews Nissan's Next-Generation Compact Car in Europe

Dynamic new concept bursting with technical innovation introduces the company's next generation mainstream B-segment contender
  • INVITATION concept underlines Nissan's commitment to compact car segment
  • An inspiration for Nissan's forthcoming new offering in the compact hatchback segment in Europe, to join Micra and Juke
  • Concept combines dynamic design, packaging and well balanced performance to appeal to sophisticated European consumers
  • Technology includes advanced safety features as well as strong fuel economy and low emissions
Nissan has revealed the first details of a head-turning hatchback concept which previews the company's next generation compact car, a mainstream B-segment contender to be sold alongside the Micra city car and innovative JUKE B-segment crossover in Europe.

Called INVITATION, the dynamic concept - which will be unveiled at this year's Geneva International Motor Show (8-18 March) - shows some of the innovation and excitement promised for the new model, which is due to be launched in Europe from 2013.

Design dynamism

INVITATION is an energetic design, bringing fresh style, innovation and excitement to the mainstream market. The clean fluidity of the silhouette hints at its dynamic potential and showcases class-leading aerodynamics for enhanced efficiency.

The side of the car is dominated by a distinctive character line, known internally as the ‘Squash Line', which adds a powerful dynamism to its profile with distinctive sculpted front and rear wings giving INVITATION a confident stance.

Inside, a refreshingly open cabin combines practicality and modernity with impressive levels of quality and purposeful technology features.

François Bancon, Deputy Division General Manager of Product Strategy and Product Planning Division, said: "The name we have given to this concept is self-explanatory... the key benefit of this compact car is to be inviting.

"It is inviting thanks to its sensuous exterior design and generous and comfortable interior space, cleverly packaged within compact overall dimensions. It is Nissan's invitation to buyers in the compact hatchback segment."

Class-leading performance and efficiency
Combining advanced engine technology, Nissan's acclaimed lightweight platform and an aerodynamically efficient body mean INVITATION achieves class-leading levels of fuel efficiency and emissions. Nissan is aiming for an ultra-low CO2 emission target of under 100g/km for the best model and with all versions eligible to wear Nissan's Pure Drive badge.

At the same time, responsive agile handling will ensure that when it comes to driving dynamics, INVITATION will compete with the top performers in the segment.

Advanced safety technology

But INVITATION is more than just a great looking car that's fun and frugal to drive. The concept packs some of the most advanced technology ever seen in the B-segment, all of which is designed to ensure the car is as safe as possible.

Among the features is Nissan's advanced Around View Monitor (AVM) safety technology - seen for the first time on a B segment car - which makes reversing and parallel parking as stress-free as possible. In addition, INVITATION also incorporates Nissan Safety Shield Technologies, which interact with the driving environment keeping the driver aware of what is happening around the car.

Conclusion
INVITATION's combination of energetic exterior style, thoughtful interior, advanced safety features and class-leading emissions, fuel economy and dynamic performance demonstrates Nissan's commitment to offering innovation and excitement to all car buyers, no matter what type of car they are looking to buy.

Nissan Sets “A World in Motion” With SAE Foundation

In 2007, Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn announced a $1.5 million pledge to the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Foundation to develop a Primary Curriculum for the “A World in Motion” (AWIM) program. The program is targeted specifically to students in the kindergarten through 3rd grades because national statistics indicate that many children fall behind and lose interest in science in the crucial 4th and 5th grades. SAE used Nissan’s donation to create four books and teaching guides that were pilot-tested and fine-tuned in U.S. elementary school classrooms.

At the 2012 North American Auto Show in Detroit, a press conference was held to show the results prior to the AWIM program’s official rollout in the United States and Canada. Attending the press conference were 100 students from local Detroit-area schools, along with NTCNA Vice President Bob Sump, SAE Foundation Board of Trustees Chairman, Mark Johnson, and fourth-grade teacher Amanda Blake, who has been piloting the program at Nashville’s Glenview Elementary School.

Students from kindergarten through fourth grade demonstrated the fresh, exciting, literature-based approach to science and problem-solving using books from the program with titles such as The Three Little Pigs’ Sledding Adventure and The Rocket Age Takes Off.

“If we can introduce students to the wonders of science or the usefulness of math in their early years, we may nurture a passion that will stay with them forever,” said Sump. “Programs such as this may help encourage more young men and women to pursue careers in science and engineering – careers that are essential for industries like ours.”

Nissan Pathfinder Concept Meets Changing Customer Needs for Enhanced Style, Comfort and Fuel Economy

In 1986, when the Nissan Pathfinder first appeared, it quickly revolutionized the sport utility vehicle segment. Offering previously unavailable features such as ample cargo room and a comfortable on-road ride, along with authentic off-road adventure performance, it immediately set a new standard in the emerging SUV class. Now 27 years and 1.2 million-plus Pathfinder sales later, a new dimension is about to be added to the popular nameplate with highly evolved, aerodynamic styling – previewed in the stylish Nissan Pathfinder Concept.

“If there is one constant among the first quarter century-plus of Pathfinder’s existence, it has been its ability to innovate, with each generation evolving to meet the changing needs of the customer,” said Al Castignetti, vice president and general manager, Nissan Division, Nissan North America, Inc. “With the upcoming, fourth-generation model, we’re about to re-invent Pathfinder again. We’ve created a vehicle with an extraordinary balance of SUV capability, thoughtful technology and premium comfort to lead the segment once again – and help owners accomplish more in the real world, not just off-road.”

One of the biggest changes to the upcoming Pathfinder design is the return to a unibody platform (also utilized on the second generation Pathfinder), which offers numerous benefits including enhanced interior packaging flexibility. This, in turn, provides an opportunity to create a more aerodynamic exterior without compromising headroom or cargo capacity. One constant through the previous generations of Pathfinder, and that continues into the new design, is its strong presence.

Moving upscale in look, the new exterior styling presents a smart fusion of signature Nissan styling cues and dynamic strength. The look is adventure-ready with wheel-oriented muscular fenders and a strong, stable stance. The upper body features an open cabin with a low beltline and thin A- and D-pillars, which flow smoothly into the rugged, durable-looking lower body. The new Pathfinder utilizes front and rear spoilers, rear tire deflectors and rear suspension fairings to help achieve what is expected to be among the best aerodynamic performance in the segment.

Other exterior details include a wide chrome grille and large aerodynamic headlights, recessed front windshield wipers, chrome door handles and large rear combination lights. A panoramic dual-panel moonroof, with sliding opening front panel and fixed rear glass panel, combines with the large windows to create an open, airy interior environment.

The Pathfinder Concept provides full-size cabin roominess inside, yet with a highly manageable exterior size. In one other important measurement, the next-gen Pathfinder is expected to weigh substantially less than the previous body-on-frame design, which helps contribute to the enhanced fuel economy performance.

“With its new, aerodynamically optimized shape, the styling is a major step forward in the evolution of the SUV – retaining its people and cargo hauling utility without looking quite so utilitarian,” said Castignetti. “It’s fitting that a vehicle that tackles adventures in a whole new way also now completely looks the part.”

Details on the Pathfinder Concept’s all-new 3-row, 7-passenger interior, featuring an array of innovative seating, comfort, entertainment and convenience features, will be released in the near future.

Addressing buyers’ desire for more efficiency in every aspect of their lives, the Pathfinder powertrain utilizes a refined V6 engine mated to a next-generation Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) to provide an expected 25 percent increase in combined City/Highway fuel economy (over the previous V6-equipped design). The Pathfinder Concept also features an intuitive four-wheel drive system and a towing capacity comparable to the leaders in the segment.

“With the new engine and CVT combination’s unprecedented efficiency, it maintains nearly the same horsepower as the previous generation’s larger displacement V6, as well as a similar driving feel,” said Castignetti. “It also retains its ability to tow boats, jet skis, trailers and a variety of other recreational gear, and its role as an excellent vehicle for unfavorable driving conditions with four-wheel drive.”

The next-gen Nissan Pathfinder, based on the Pathfinder Concept design, is scheduled to go on sale at Nissan dealers nationwide in fall 2012.

“The new Pathfinder carries on the tradition of the adventure-ready vehicles that have come before – offering a new level of family enjoyment and engagement that is just right for today’s real-world, everyday uses,” concluded Castignetti. “After more than 25 years, Pathfinder is ready to tackle new terrain and the new challenges of modern family lives.”

Nissan Makes Delhi Auto Expo Debut

Nissan made a first-ever appearance at the Delhi Auto Expo this week amid rapid sales growth in the world's second most populous nation.

The Japanese automaker introduced the Evalia seven-seater passenger vehicle and showed a fuel-sipping diesel version of the Sunny, as the models shared the limelight with Bollywood star and Nissan brand ambassador Ranbir Kapoor.

Building on the success of the Chennai-built Micra and Sunny sedans, the Evalia will help Nissan reach a 100,000-vehicle annual sales goal in India by 2013 compared with just 400 in 2009, as part of longer term plans to significantly raise market share, said Corporate Vice President Gilles Normand.

“Today we are at market share of 1.5% in India, and as we said globally, we want 8% for Power 88,” Normand said, adding that the same ratio, in time, is achievable in the South Asian nation. “There’s no reason we shouldn’t be able to capture similar share in India.”

Delhi Auto Expo 2012 runs through Jan. 12 and features about 50 new vehicle launches, aiming to build on 2010, which the organizers claimed was the second most visited auto show globally.

Industry-wide sales growth slowed in the second half of 2011, but the Delhi show’s rise to global prominence and space constraints meant it turned down dozens of exhibitors this year, highlighting long-term expectations for India.

“India is still about a fifth of the size of China. I would expect growth in Indian car sales, which were below 2 million last year, to grow at an average of about 10% a year over the next five years," said Ashvin Chotai, managing director of consulting company Intelligence Automotive Asia.

For dealerships like Nath Nissan near Delhi, the biennial event adds momentum to already fast-growing sales that reached 200 units a month last year, with the diesel Sunny expected to further boost demand.

“We’re participating in the Auto Expo this time and it’s a big thing for us,” said manager Mohd. Rizwan Rizvi. “The best thing is that we’re here and with good, competitive models with a good price.”

India is an important market for Nissan's mid-term growth strategy, and this year's Delhi debut marks a its commitment to further sales expansion.

Nissan and Daimler to produce engines together in North America

In the latest step forward in the collaboration of the Renault-Nissan Alliance and Daimler, Nissan’s Decherd, Tenn., plant will build Mercedes-Benz 4-cylinder engines for Infiniti and Mercedes-Benz starting in 2014.
Nissan and Daimler will produce Mercedes-Benz 4-cylinder gasoline engines together at Nissan’s powertrain assembly plant in Decherd, Tenn. Production will begin in 2014, with installed capacity of 250,000 units per year once full ramp–up is achieved. The Decherd facility will produce engines for Mercedes-Benz and Infiniti models.

“This is the newest milestone in our pragmatic collaboration and our most significant project outside of Europe so far,” said Renault-Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn. “Localized capacity reduces exposure to foreign exchange rates while rapidly enabling a good business development in North America – a win-win for the Alliance and Daimler.”

The collaboration marks the first production of Mercedes-Benz engines in the North America Free Trade region. The Tennessee plant’s strategic location and logistics links ensure a direct supply of engines starting in 2014 for the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, built at Daimler’s vehicle plant in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

“In the context of our Mercedes-Benz 2020 growth strategy, we have decided that we will expand the production capacities required for this close to the customers. Through the strategic extension of our cooperation with Renault-Nissan we can realize near-market engine production in the NAFTA region on attractive economic terms and make optimum use of synergies arising from the cooperation,” Dr. Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Daimler Board of Management and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars, said. “Thus we are systematically broadening our manufacturing footprint in this important growth market.”

Nissan began powertrain assembly in Decherd in 1997. Today it manufactures 4-, 6- and 8-cylinder engines for the complete lineup of U.S.-produced Nissan and Infiniti vehicles. The plant also houses crankshaft forging and cylinder block casting operations. In 2011, Decherd produced more than 580,000 engines on a covered area of more than 1.2 million square feet (111,000 square meters).

Project portfolio expands

Daimler and the Renault-Nissan Alliance launched their strategic collaboration in April 2010, including an equity exchange that gives the Renault-Nissan Alliance a 3.1 percent stake in Daimler and Daimler a combined 3.1 percent interest in Renault and Nissan.

The collaboration began with three project pillars:
  • Joint smart/Twingo architecture: The project is on track for launch in the early first quarter of 2014. Two-seater smart vehicles will be produced at Daimler’s plant in Hambach, France, and four-seater smart and Renault production are slated for Renault’s plant in Novo Mesto, Slovenia.
  • All-new entry-level city van project for Mercedes-Benz: The project is on schedule with expected launch in late 2012. Manufacturing at Renault’s plant in Maubeuge, France.
  • Powertrain cross-supply: The Alliance is supplying Daimler with compact three-cylinder gasoline engines to be used in smart and Twingo vehicles and four-cylinder diesel engines to be used in the jointly developed light commercial vehicle and in Mercedes-Benz’s next generation of premium compact cars. Daimler will supply Nissan and Infiniti with four- and six-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines from the current and future engine portfolio as well as with automatic transmissions.
Since its founding in April 2010, the collaboration has been gradually expanded. In addition to the announcement this week about North American engine production, the companies also decided to partner on:
  • Platform sharing: Infiniti plans to base a premium compact vehicle on the Mercedes compact-car architecture, starting in 2014.
  • Zero-emission vehicles: Daimler will provide batteries from its production facility in Kamenz, Germany, and Renault-Nissan will provide electric motors for the use in electric vehicles (smart and Twingo ZE). First releases will occur in 2014.

NISSAN CHAMPIONS UNITE IN THE DESERT

To celebrate a year of racing success in 2011, Nissan’s champions will come together to compete in the 2012 Dubai 24 Hours in January.

Racing the brand new GT3-specification Nissan GT-R will be champions from the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup, the Le Mans Series, the FIA GT1 World Championship and the Blancpain Endurance Series, namely Franck Mailleux, Tom Kimber-Smith, Michael Krumm and Alex Buncombe. This car will be run by JRM Racing.

The ‘Champions’ Nissan GT-R will be joined by two Nissan 370Zs at Dubai. A seat in a GT4 Nissan 370Z at the Dubai 24 Hours is of course the prize for the GT Academy winners so this year’s graduates, Jann Mardenborough from the UK and Bryan Heitkotter from the USA, will compete in the ‘RJN GT Academy’ Nissan 370Z. Joining them will be two more GT Academy winners and now fully-fledged racing champions: Lucas Ordonez and Jordan Tresson.

“We’re pleased to reward our champions with the opportunity to race Nissan’s exciting new GT3-specification Nissan GT-R in the Dubai 24 Hours,” said Darren Cox, Chief Marketing Manager Crossover and Sportscars, Nissan Europe. “Dubai will be the culmination of a fantastic year for Nissan Motorsport. The champions are representing their teams that took the successes in 2011. RJN Motorsport, Signatech Nissan, Greaves Motorsport and JRM Racing have been great partners for us this year. Despite this professional driver line-up, this is more of an end of season celebration and a chance to showcase the Nissan GT-R during its ongoing development than a full tilt at victory.”

Completing the three-car Nissan line-up in Dubai will be a second Nissan 370Z and the drivers for this car will be revealed in the New Year. Until then, “Merry Christmas from the motorsport team at Nissan! We have had a fun and successful year but can’t wait to show you our plans for 2012!”
